Annual sports dinner on Monday at the RSL
GREG Holmes is one of 45 athletes to win overall sports star awards in the Warwick region in the past 24 years.
The annual Daily News/Warwick Daily News Senior Sports Star of the Year awards night for 2016 is at the Warwick RSL Memorial Club on Monday night and people attending the dinner are asked to purchase tickets today at the Daily News or call 46601355 with numbers.
The Warwick Credit Union and Daily News have been involved in junior sports awards since the start of the 1993 year. For more than a decade, the Warwick Credit Union has been the major sponsor of the senior awards which started in 1994.
The 45 overall winners in junior and senior awards down the years include Olympic gold medallist Dean Butler who won overall awards at junior and senior level.
Greg Holmes was a multiple monthly winner from athletics when he was a winner in throws at state and national level. He won one overall junior award before going on to change sports and play rugby union with the Queensland Reds and Australian Wallabies and now with Exeter in England.
He has dreams of being a fire fighter or may even end up back on the farm at Allora after his rugby career. Monthly winners have come from all the major centres covered by the awards, including Texas, Inglewood, Clifton, Allora, Killarney and Warwick areas.
Australian Jillaroos captain Stephanie Hancock (Killarney) and star netballer Laura Geitz (Allora) won overall awards down the years. Geitz is currently on family leave but could return to play for the Diamonds in next year's Commonwealth Games.
In recent years, the importance of local sport in the awards has been highlighted by the presentation of the Warwick RSL Memorial Club "Club Person of the Year", an award based on performances at local level and volunteer work in the previous 12 months. The winner will receive $500 from the Warwick RSL Memorial Club and trophy.
Warwick Credit Union CEO Lewis von Stieglitz said he was looking forward to an outstanding night to honour the very worthy monthly winners.
"I am continually amazed by the number of sports covered by the awards. It is huge to have winners from 10 different sports, this area continues to punch above its weight in sport," he said.
The overall winner will receive $1000 from the Warwick Credit Union. Trophies will be presented to all monthly winners.
