Tip-off leads to cemetery plants
THE gardens at the Warwick Cemetery are now back to their original beauty, after the disappearance behind seven of the 10 trees stolen last month was unearthed yesterday.
An anonymous tip to Warwick police led to the discovery of the trees, which had been re-planted in the front yard of a Warwick residence after being stolen from the cemetery.
Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) cemetery gardener Peter Doro said he thought public backlash had helped return the trees to their home.
"Someone must have dobbed them in," he said.
"It's not the first time we've had plants stolen, but we've never found them before."
Warwick police and council staff visited the home where the plants were reported to be, and dug them out to be re-planted at the cemetery.
The occupants weren't home at the time.
Cemetery gardener Wayne Brosnan said it was clear the plants were the ones stolen.
"If they had been pot plants they'd have compacted dirt around them - these were just roots. They're definitely our plants," he said.
The plants were in poorer condition having not had much water, but the pair were certain they'd be able to salvage them.
They now hope to find the remaining three plants.
Investigations into the theft are continuing and no charges have yet been laid.
