Anti-Adani protesters target city engineering firm
ANTI-ADANI protesters will this week target a multinational engineering company in a number of "colourful protests" from Townsville to Hobart.
Today, the #StopAdani group will start its National Week of Action by protesting outside of the Townsville GHD office on Stanley St.
The group claims GHD is one of the biggest contractors to work on the Adani Carmichael project.
Australian Youth Climate Coalition campaigns director Olivia Hall, from Brisbane, said she would be protesting in favour of a switch to renewable energy sources.
"Young people know that to have a safe future we need to keep coal in the ground and switch to cleaner energy," she said.
"GHD has a choice to make - either build Adani's mine or help us build a future we can all be proud of.
"In the sunshine state, it's time to harness the power of the sun and each other to build clean energy industries of the future."
Brisbane-based physiotherapist, grandfather and member of #StopAdani Indooroopilly Paul Grace said GHD's support for the Adani project contradicted its claim to have a "commitment to sustainable development".
"Digging and burning the coal from Adani's mine threatens Queensland's groundwater, tramples the land rights of traditional owners and drives more intense heatwaves, bushfires, droughts and storms," he said.
"Queensland is already experiencing record-breaking droughts, heat and bushfires, so we are calling on GHD to side with the community which wants to see action on climate change, not another big, dirty coal mine."
According to the GHD website, there are no clear links between the company and the Adani Carmichael coal mine.
In a separate project, GHD was appointed by North Queensland Bulk Ports to expand the Port of Abbot Point. The project included the development of a multi cargo facility, providing 12 shipping berths, a tug harbour and dredged access channel.
GHD has also been contracted by Powerlink to extend the existing high voltage electricity transmission network into the Galilee Basin region, with several large-scale mines proposed in the area.
GHD has been contacted for comment on the protests.
