Redbacks claim win to keep Anzac Cup in Warwick
IN a totally one-sided affair in front of a large crowd, the Warwick Credit Union Redbacks claimed their fourth scalp from four starts this season.
They kicked a massive 28.18 (186) to demoralise newcomers to the AFL Darling Downs competition the South Burnett Saints 1.9 (15), put their name on the Anzac Cup for the 10th time in 12 years, and keep it in Warwick like it has been since 2007.
The defensive pressure put on by the WCU Redbacks kept the Saints goal-less until well into the last quarter and the cohesion in the Reddies' entire performance was first class.
Losing key defender Kurt Millard at quarter time to a hamstring injury (possibly out for three weeks) was a blow, but Shannon Cameron mustered his newly arranged back six to perfection and came up with the goods.
Mark Borgert played a flawless game for the full four quarters on the wing, constantly bringing the ball out of defence into attack with his safe hands and precision kicking earning him the coveted Anzac Medallion for best on ground.
Last-minute withdrawal Alex Cutmore left the team without a ruckman and Dion Phillips was asked to stand up to the task, and stand up he did, winning a majority of centre bounces and bursting through packs at will.
Phillips performance in only his fourth game was outstanding.
Goal sneaks Kurt Heier and Dale Randall slammed home 10 goals between them and they were dangerous all day. This result has taken the WCU Reddies to second place on the ladder.
The afternoon commenced with an Anzac service and a big thank you must go to Barry Kelly representing the Veterans Support and Advocacy Service Australia (VSASA) and John Skinner, president of the Warwick RSL Sub-branch.
Junior games preceded the ceremony and the senior game on Saturday.
