Big year for barrel racer

By GERARD WALSH

KILLARNEY barrel racer Bianca Weier has finished the year with six rodeo buckles and is already eyeing off a career in the United States. Weier and Freestone bull rider Ben Ruhle both won open rookie titles in the National Rodeo Association, which were presented on Saturday night at Caboolture. She won the open rookie barrel racing title for the year in the NRA and backed up with her second successive junior barrel racing title to finish the finals with two buckles. In the Australian Professional Rodeo Association, Weier won the Sunshine Circuit in junior barrel racing and the open second-division title. She was 12-14 years Australian High School Rodeo Association champion and won the all around cowgirl award at the Warwick State High School Rodeo to make it six buckles for the year. Weier said she competed in a lot more APRA rodeos this year and planned to head north to Cloncurry and Mt Isa next year. "I want to win an APRA barrel racing title and then compete in the United States," she said. She is in number one position to represent Australia in the Trans-Tasman Challenge in March. Ruhle suffered a facial injury in the first round of the NRA finals but still had enough bull riding points for the year to win the open rookie title on top of a fourth place in the first round of the open bull ride at the Warwick Rodeo. In other top performances by Warwick competitors in the NRA, Warwick cowboy Damian Clarke won his second NRA junior bull riding title. Warwick cowboy Bevan Eastwell won the rope and tie in the second round of the NRA finals on Friday night and was second in round one a week earlier at Ipswich. Steve Porter won Saturday night's third round of the finals in the steer wrestling at Caboolture. Roz Flood was fourth in two of the finals rounds of the barrel race. Matt Russell won the steer ride at the NRA junior rodeo on Saturday afternoon at Caboolture. Mitch Eastwell was the 15-18 years champion at the rodeo and Wade Eastwell the breakaway roping winner.
