Flood ropes his way to victory

WARWICK cowboy Allan Flood won the rope and tie at the Killarney Rodeo, which attracted a better than expected crowd at the weekend. Flood recorded 10.7 seconds to win from Willowvale cowboy Bevan Eastwell who recorded 10.8. Gene Hinks, of the Brisbane Valley, was third. Eastwell's son Mitch won the high school rope and tie on Saturday morning and the junior breakaway roping on Saturday afternoon at Killarney to record a double. Killarney schoolgirl Bianca Weier won the junior barrel race and was third in the open event. National champion cowgirl Judy Gough, of Lowood, won the breakaway roping. Killarney Show Society treasurer David Thomson said the crowd was better than expected. "Entries are well up on last year, which is probably to do with us affiliating with the National Rodeo Association rather than Queensland Rodeo Association," Thomson said. "This is the first year we have had jackpot-timed events the night before our rodeo, which went well. After the show we put on during the two days this year, I expect a much bigger crowd next year." There were 35 nominations in the team roping and 25 in the open bull ride, two of the most popular events with competitors. The only injuries at the rodeo were a dislocated shoulder and dislocated wrist. There were no injuries to stock. Thomson said the new rodeo arena at the showgrounds had been well accepted by the crowd. "It is much easier to see the action with grandstands on both sides," he said. "We will again have next year's rodeo on the second weekend in September."
