Jason wins drags gong

By Gerard Walsh

MANY memories of Craig Thompson and a yellow HJ Monaro came flooding back when the first memorial trophy in his honour were presented at Dragfest 05. Craig died suddenly at work on December 1, 2003, at the age of 19 and a perpetual trophy is presented in his honour to the top driver in the street bracket at the Warwick Dragway each year. His father Graham Thompson said Craig and brother Scott raced at Morgan Park from the early days of the local drag racing club. "At the start, they both raced a yellow HJ Monaro and later raced their own good cars," Graham said. "Craig lived life to the fullest and got on with everyone. "He had a ball and would have been in drag racing all his life. Craig had no injuries during his time in sport." The inaugural trophy was won by Jason White, of Bundamba, and will be hotly contested next year. "A lot of blokes want to win the trophy, including Scott," Graham said. As well as drag racing, Craig was involved in cross country motor bike racing and competed in an event at Ballandean the weekend before his death.
