Julie makes Killarney rodeo a family affair

By GERARD WALSH ?? WARWICK cowgirl Julie Small returned to the rodeo arena after a break of 13 years to win the breakaway roping at the 2005 Killarney Rodeo on Saturday. Small rode Shorty and roped two of her three calves with times of four seconds, and 2.9 seconds. Krystal Bell finished second and Rebecca Fleming was third in the Killarney Show and Rodeo Society event. "I spend a lot of time roping with my three sons at their father Bevin Eastwell's place at Willowvale and the boys talked me into competing so their Dad and Mum would compete with them at the same rodeo,'' Small said. "In the breakaway roping, I rode Bevin's horse Shorty (to a win). Bevin and the boys compete each week and Darren (my husband), my Mum Linda Schwenke and extended family all go as well.'' To cap off an outstanding rodeo, Small's youngest son Brock Eastwell, 11, won the under-18 breakaway roping from his brothers Wade, 17, who was second, and Mitch, 15, who came third. Wade was second in the men's rope-and-tie behind experienced competitor Allan Flood. Glengallan cowboy Tom McCarthy was third. Wade is currently leading the rookie standings in the National Rodeo Association (NRA) rope-and-tie. Mitch and Brock are in the top five for the junior breakaway roping standings. The boys' father Bevin Eastwell has been placed in the rope-and-tie at Laidley and Nanango rodeos in the past month but did not finish in the money at Killarney. Adam McKellar, of Augathella, won the novice bull ride at the rodeo, when only two cowboys made time on Frank Biddle-owned bulls. Warwick rider Peter Delandre was second. In the juvenile bull ride, Brody Roon won from students Will Comiskey and Lachlan Arthur, of Nudgee College, Brisbane. Only four juvenile riders made time on bulls from the Ross Hamilton string. Warwick schoolboy Callum Miller won the junior steer ride from Lachlan Slade, of Emu Vale, and Matt Russell, of Warwick. Warwick rider Paula Donovan won the open barrel race from Killarney schoolgirls Bianca Weier and Rachel Clarke. Katrina Mauch (Freestone) and Weier were equal first in the junior barrel race. Clarke finished third.
