Outstanding athlete: Jeremy wins five ribbons

By GERARD WALSH ?? JEREMY Jerome recorded three firsts, one second and one third to win the outstanding male athlete award at last week's Darling Downs Primary School Athletics Championships in Toowoomba. In the 100 metres, he crossed the line first in the 12 years age group with a personal best time of 13.05 seconds and was also first in the 200m in 27.62. The Warwick West State School student jumped a personal best of 5.03 metres in long jump, only .23 outside the record. He was second in high jump with 1.34m and third in shot put with 9.85m, a distance good enough to qualify him for the State Championships. Jeremy will compete in Brisbane in the State Championships on September 6-7 and will be aiming for a medal after finishing fifth in the 100m and eighth in the long jump at State level in 2004. While many may tip an outstanding athletics career for Jeremy, his main sporting ambition is to play in the National Rugby League competition. Jeremy plays centre for the Eastern Suburbs under-14 side which has only lost one game this season. He has a best of six tries in a game. He is also an accomplished cricketer. While his success last week in the Darling Downs championships was a new career high, Jeremy was in outstanding form in last month's Southern Downs trials with wins in the 100m, 200m, long jump, high jump and shot put and seconds in discus and the 800m. Jeremy, who is in four events at the State Championships, will be joined by three school mates. Alicia Cole won the long jump and qualified for the Darling Downs team with a leap of 3.85m in the 10 years age group in the regional titles. Bonnie Flood was third in her long jump with 4.17m in 12 years. Amanda Politch finished second in the 200 metres in 29.56.
