THEY are one of the strangest-looking things to come from technology giant Apple, but they may still change the way we listen to music.

Apple's new wireless earphones or "AirPods" are now available to buy online and will start showing up at stores next week.

They will cost $229.

By comparison, a 16GB iPod Touch costs $279.

The AirPods come standard with the latest iPhones, but for those yet to see them in the wild, they look like classic Apple earphones snipped short.

The AirPods automatically detect when they are in or out of your ear. They can also be used to access Siri, who can be instructed to find directions or make telephone calls.

Apple believes its "magical wireless headphones" will "reinvent how we listen to music".

The intuitive devices can detect when they are placed into your ear, and will automatically play or pause your music.

If you double-tap on the AirPods, you can ask automated helper Siri to change song, find directions or make calls.

They will survive for about five hours without needing a charge.
