Roping at Rodeo heats up as apprentice faces master

RODEO: A nineteen-year-old from Townsville could be the star of the roping at the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships on October 22-25.

Campbell Hodson spent a lot of time as a teenager living at Emerald and learning his craft from the best in the business - Shane Kenny.

He will be up against a field including Kenny next week at the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships.

Hodson now lives in Townsville and is also in the rope and tie, where he ranks ninth.

He is ranked second in team roping headers and will team with past winner and Australian Professional Rodeo Association all-around standings leader Terry Evison at the Warwick Showgrounds.

Evison will need some placings in team roping if he is going to beat Kenny and some other top chances in the battle for the all-around title.

At the end of the 2015 season, Evison was on top of the APRA all-around standings.

The favourites in team roping are the two leaders at the end of the season: Hughenden rider Clancy Middleton and Emerald star Brodie Moss.

Middleton has enjoyed plenty of pro tour success but next week will be seeking his first open title in any event.

Moss will also be seeking his first open title.

Middleton is also in the rope and tie and steer wrestling so could challenge for the all around title.

Ones to watch

Heath Litchfield and Aaron Bookluck: Litchfield is from Griffith in New South Wales and Bookluck from Nilma North in Victoria and both have won team roping titles with other partners.

Litchfield shared title success with Warwick star Johnny Osborne and Bookluck won his first title as a teenager with fellow Victorian young gun Terry Evison.

Garry McPhee and Gary Tielan: McPhee is a member of one of the most famous rodeo families in the nation and is one of the stock contractors for the rodeo.

He will travel from Lurg in Victoria and team with Argaston (SA) rider Gary Tielan.
