Apprentices build the future of print industry

ONE of the many hard-working blokes at the Warwick APN Print site is Nick Crouch.

Nick, 22, has been with the company for the past five years and joined the team straight out of high school.

In that time he has seen the print site grow and develop to what it is today.

"When I started here, we were just a little front section and now we have this big shed and more," he said.

"There's a lot more happening under the one roof from web, digital and design."

He said he believed he could learn everything involved in the industry at Warwick.

The site can now print up to 50,000 APN newspapers in a single day.

"It's good to see that we've stepped forward in the industry and not back," he said.

Nick started out working one day a week while he was in high school. He took design courses at TAFE and eventually ended up working as an apprentice at the site.

His apprenticeship finished last year and now he works in graphic design and pre-press.

He works Monday to Friday and every second Saturday.

His job in pre-press requires him to check the files of the jobs sent in to make sure none of the pages bleed or are cut off.

"We try to pick up everything to the best of our ability," he said

"It can be quite stressful.

"It's always fun when I get a chance to design instead."

The site has three printing systems including digital, web and sheet fed.

Digital is Nick's favourite.

"Digital printing is like a much bigger version of a photocopier," he said.

"When I got told it was coming here, I was fairly excited.

"It's one thing I've always wanted to work on."

The 22-year-old has lived in Warwick since he was in preschool and said he was glad to be able to build a career in the Rose City.

Warwick Print Facility manager Allan Ruhle said the company had seven new apprentices start this year and two were almost qualified.

Many of the staff members working at the site started out as apprentices and have used the stepping stone to forge strong careers in printing and develop enviable skills.
