Archer takes aim at travelling around the world

WOODENBONG archer Remy Leonard is preparing to travel around the world to pursue his dream of competing against the very best.

A student at Woodenbong Central School, Remy is training to be part of the Australian archery team.

This year he will represent his country as an indoor team shooter at the world archery championships in Ankara, Turkey.

At just 16 years old, Remy has been named Shooter of the Year by the 3D Archery Association of Australia a total of three times.

The third win qualifies Remy for partial funding by the 3DAAA to compete in the International Bowhunting Organisation world championships in Pennsylvania in August

Last month at the Woodenbong community Christmas party, Remy amazed onlookers with a demonstration of his skills.

Woodenbong Progress Association project officer Carey Andrews said she was amazed by the young archer's composure at the party.

"He's so poised when he does it," she said.

"I don't know how he manages to hold that position for so long.

"The family actually said at the shoots even the older archers can't believe he can hold concentration so long and that's why he's so accurate."

Remy suffered a blow just before Christmas when his bow snapped while shooting with top archers Michael Brosnan and Scott Bryce.

"The bow Remy was planning on taking to Turkey had a manufacturing defect and blew out," he said.

"When it happened he was shooting with two of the best archers in the country.

"Between them they made up a bow for Remy to keep practicing with while we wait for the replacement parts."

The young athlete faces a busy year of travelling with competitions in New Zealand, Turkey, Ireland, Melbourne and the United States.

To help cover the costs of competing Remy has received donations from local groups and archery bodies.

Mr Leonard said the family was grateful for the support pouring in to help fund Remy's travel costs.

"We've raised around $4000 so far," he said.

"In a small town like Woodenbong everyone knows who needs help and the small committees do get behind those doing well."

Woodenbong Central School has set up an administration account to collect donations and support its star student.
