Artwork more than a picture

THEY have done it again.

Brothers and well-known local artists Kerry and Malcolm Nicholson, once again took out the coveted People's Choice Award in the 10th International Muralfest held in Sheffield in Tasmania.

Each year artists from around the world vie for a position to enter the event and once accepted, are then whittled down to a shortlist of nine finalists, chosen by the curators of the Hobart, Launceston and Davenport Art Galleries.

Each artist submits a miniature of their proposed mural which is based on their individual interpretation of a poem chosen at the previous year's festival.

The Nicholson brothers, sponsored by Targa Tasmania, entered a mural titled The Quilt based on the poem Power of Community by P. B. Tewson, and said the mural was more than just a picture on a wall.

"It's about mateship, persistence and a healthy belief in self," Malcolm said.

Malcolm and Kerry's winning mural depicts seniors Estelle Zeller, Carmel Pocklington, Jean Paterson and Dorren Dau of Allora, and Paula Skaines of Clifton, embroidering a quilt in a park while being served a cuppa and biscuits by Clarissa Boomfield, a young respite volunteer, as Kerry's granddaughter, Milly, looks on from the foreground.
