OPINION: Down's events give our community character
AS a recent addition to the Warwick Daily News team, and the residential community, the highlight of my experience so far has been discovering the wonderful and varied events that make the Southern Downs region its own.
One of my first tasks was to help put together the program for this year's Historic Leyburn Sprints. I hope many of you reading this have returned from a weekend of amazing memories at this year's 20th anniversary event.
I admit to not having heard of the Leyburn racing event prior to moving to Warwick, but after reading through the history and hearing people's experiences from previous years, the excitement was infectious.

There is something special about the idea of a small sleepy town suddenly bursting into life, full of adrenaline, records and reminders of past decades.
Not to mention all the hard work the many community and committee members who make the event the success it has become, finally reap the rewards of 12 months preparation.
For a hidden gem of Australian racing and war time history to reside in our back yard is the perfect illustration of what makes the Southern Downs such a great place to live.
It's events like these are what makes the Southern Down region such a special place to be a part of.
