Association hosts flood fundraiser

TENNIS will return to the Warwick courts on January 29 when a flood fundraiser is held at the Warwick Tennis Association courts in Fitzroy Street.

Association president Nathan Costello said he had 10 players already confirmed.

“It will be an American-style tournament for those who want to play competitive tennis and social tennis for young children and adults who just want to have a hit,” Costello said.

Two Australian Open player towels will be raffled on the day.

The Brisbane International Tennis Centre had pledged items for raffle prizes but these have since gone under water.

While it is already thinking ahead to a social tennis afternoon, the association has its own damage to repair with 220mm of water going into the clubhouse and floodwater covering all 10 courts.

Costello said one synthetic court (number six) had been destroyed by the flood and another five had been damaged.

“We are hoping someone from Tennis Queensland can inspect the courts this week,” he said.

“There were bubbles on some of the courts after the flood so we will have to see what damage has been caused.

“We are lucky compared to other clubs,” Costello said.

Surprisingly, the bubbles were also on the hard court surface.

It takes $35,000 to resurface a synthetic court and $10,000 for a hard court.

Association members lifted all items which could be lifted above the expected flood level.

The flood fundraiser is from 3pm to 7pm on January 29 with a charge of $10 per person and $5 for children 12 years and under.

A barbecue, bar and canteen will be operating.

The association is hoping to borrow a large-screen television on the night so patrons can watch the Australian Open ladies singles final.
