Assumption champs gear up for more
SWIMMING: It is one carnival down and maybe three to go for Assumption College representative swimmers this season.
Edmund Rice House won both the overall and relay trophies at the house carnival on Friday after victory over runner-up Romero and McAuley houses.
Donovan House was awarded the Lee Gunderman House Spirit Award.
Three age champions won all of their events, finishing with 64 points - Matt Blakemore and the Ryan siblings, Seamus and Nella.
Five records were set at the carnival - three in 12 years individual events (Nella Ryan - freestyle, breaststroke and Chris Watt - butterfly) and two in the relays.
McAuley set a record in the inaugural 4x50m 12 years mixed relay and Rice took three seconds off the open girls' record in the 4x50m relay.
Assumption students who compete in the Border District swimming carnival at Stanthorpe on Tuesday and Warwick All-Schools on February 15 have a chance to swim qualifying times for the Darling Downs championships at Gatton on February 23.
Swimmers in the 12 years group will compete at Southern Downs on February 17.
Swimmers who succeed at Darling Downs trials may be selected in the Darling Downs team to contest the state championships.
