Assumption College trio to play in Cyril Connell Cup finals game
RUGBY LEAGUE: Three students from Assumption College will play for the Toowoomba Clydesdales in a Cyril Connell Cup under-16 finals game on Sunday at 2.30pm.
The Clydesdales finished on top of their pool in the fixture competition and is the only pool leader to have to play away from home in the first week of the finals
Toowoomba will play Gold Coast Green in a quarter final on Sunday at Davies Park in Brisbane. The top-two from each pool qualified for the play-offs.
The trio from Assumption are lock Cody Byrne, hooker Sam Frattini and prop Augustine Stowers.
Byrne lives at Killarney and plays for the Collegians club in Warwick.
He scored three tries for Toowoomba in the game against Central Crows at Chinchilla with some excellent line running. Byrne is one of the leading tacklers each week.
Frattini has been the starting hooker all season and for the past month has been used for the full 60 minutes in each game. He has formed a great combination with teammates Byrne, Brock Dimment and Luke Maiden.
Stowers is used as an impact player off the bench at prop.
He is a strong runner and hard-working defender. He scored a try against Ipswich two weeks ago.
The Clydesdales team is coached by Derek Brady, of Dalby.
Warwick State High School student Cruise Martin-Brown played some trial games early in the season.
The Clydesdales need to win to stay in the hunt for Cyril Connell Cup premiership glory.
Meanwhile, Assumption College has five players in Darling Downs schoolboys teams this season.
Taegan Inmon and Sam Ogden are in the under-15 team to play in the state carnival at Longreach.
The Darling Downs open team includes Assumption trio Tom Morris, Angus Somes and Mitchell Watson. Craig Frattini is coach.
