Assumption science block opens

THERE was a flury of Bunsen burners and test tubes at Assumption College yesterday, as the new science block had its grand opening.

After a ceremony involving speeches, prayers and songs, the building was deemed officially open.

The block began its refurbishment about 18 months ago and boasts a plethora of new equipment, beckoning eager students into the world of science.

Principal Peter Molony said the college was in much need of a new science laboratory and the equipment meant better learning facilities.

"The previous science building was built in the 1960s so it needed a refurbishment," Mr Molony said.

"With all the new equipment we were able to buy, it brings us into the 21st Century.

"It's all technology-based these days so this refurbishment allowed us to incorporate new technology into our curriculum," he said.

The $450,000 refurbishment was funded by a recent federal grant, plus the combination of a previous grant in 2009.

Science teacher Chris Schultz said the grant allowed teaching in the laboratory to be more enjoyable.

"We are a lot more up-to-date in terms of technology and it makes working with juniors much easier," Mr Schultz said.

He said the college would have been unable to buy the new equipment without the grant.

Senior student Karinne Law said she was pleased with the new science building.

"Science pracs are so much easier," she said.

"We can do a lot more and the results are much more accurate." .
