Southern Downs athletes off to Melbourne

FIVE athletes from the Southern Downs will travel to Melbourne for the Australian All Schools Championships on December 4-6.

The students are part of the Queensland Heat team selected last week.

The Southern Downs will also be represented at the nationals for 10-12 years athletes but the full team has not yet been released.

Lucy Bourke (Scots PGC) and Zachary Beckwith (Killarney State School) are two of the likely starters.

The top Southern Downs performer at the state championships in Brisbane was Warwick High student Zac Caterson who won gold in shot put and silver in discus and javelin in the 13 years age group.

Brendan Hoffman may be better known as a rugby league player and swimmer but is shining in athletics, winning gold in the shot put and coming fourth in discus.

He was only 2.55m under the state shot put record set in 2009 so will be a medal chance in Melbourne.

Sophie Follett has made the state team after a second in the 3000m.

Assumption student Jack Bannister was first in discus and fourth in hammer to again qualify for the nationals.

His schoolmate Liam Duncan improved his PB by 5m to come second in hammer and make the team.

Aaron Payne (Warwick High) set national AWD records in 100m and 200m for his classification.
