THE controversial, first-ever release of state school audit results at the weekend could be the last.

Education Queensland director-general Julie Grantham addressed all state school principals in a letter yesterday afternoon to advise that all future audits would be suspended, following tension with the Queensland Teachers' Union.

"It is my view that the audits are of such significant value to our schools that I am going to suspend the audits in order to facilitate further consultation with senior officers of the QTU without the additional pressure and disruption of ongoing disputation," she wrote.

"My goal in doing so is to resolve any issues that have arisen between the Department and the QTU."

Despite the turmoil, local schools are revelling in their great performances, with 69-student-strong Yangan State School landing itself in the top 20 overall schools.

Very few schools managed to achieve the highest possible grading of "outstanding", however Yangan scored two.

Principal Ian Rathmell said while he was pleased with the results, the aim was not to compare schools but to develop student potential.

"To me it's always about improving and how we can make our school even better," he said.

"While we are very happy with the results, we won't stop continuing to improve and find better ways of doing things."

Mr Rathmell spoke highly of the ground-breaking audit process and said it was a great tool for state schools to have.

"I think it's a wonderful process for us to have a look at how we are going across the board," he said.

"We have a fantastic team that works so well together and we all support each other. It's about working hard but in saying that, every school and every teacher does that."
