Aunt sets pace in family motorsports affair

THREE generations of the Campbell family did battle on the bitumen when round four of the Queensland Motor Racing Championships was staged at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend.

Budding national series driver Matt Campbell, his aunt Teresa and grandfather Bill faced off in the same category at the two-day meet.

Matt drove a Datsun 1200 Coupe while Teresa and Bill lined up in Holden Torana XU1s.

Matt's car has the lowest capacity of the three and when Bill had mechanical problems, the stage was set for Teresa to claim family honours.

Warwick was well represented at the championships with the Dawes Racing Team in action.

Rebecca Dawes and fiancé Mark Gray raced in the Gemini category.

Dawes started her season at Bathurst with a ninth in a field of 50 and has since contested all four rounds of the championships.

"There was a good field of cars at Morgan Park Raceway this weekend, a lot more than normal," she said.

"We had qualifying and one race on Saturday and the heat was extreme in the cars. The whole field had trouble with the cars playing up due to the heat.

"All the drivers are looking forward to next year. It will be bigger and better."
