Aussie duo survive carnage

AUSTRALIAN riders Sam Willoughby and Khalen Young have survived the carnage of the men's BMX quarter-finals at the London Olympics.

Highlighted by a number of spectacular crashes, the Australian duo did just enough to secure a place in the semi-finals.

However, the quarter-finals did not leave either rider unscathed, Young crashing out in his first race, while Willoughby had a number of close scares.

Australia's other entrant, Brian Kirkham, failed to make it through to the semi-finals.

Young and Willoughby have been drawn in opposite semi-final heats, but will be pitted against quality opposition, with Dutchman Raymon van der Biezen leading out Young's heat and France's Joris Daudet the man to beat on Willoughby's side.

The men's semi-finals begin on Friday (London time).
