Diesel ready to rock Warwick
FEW performers can boast a 25-year career, 10 top-10 albums, a swag of ARIA Awards and songs which have made their way into every jukebox in the country.
But Diesel can – and Warwickites will get to see the man in the flesh next month.
Diesel – AKA Mark Lizotte – will roll into town as a part of his ‘Under the Influence’ tour, promoting his new album of the same name.
The album is his take on some old classics which have inspired him and his songwriting over the years.
Diesel said the idea for the album came about when he started playing these favourite songs as homage to work which had inspired him.
“It really just took traction from there and that’s why we recorded the album in the same live fashion that we played in,” he said.
It took less than a fortnight in the studio to record the selection of tracks made famous by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Al Green, Neil Young and lesser known songs by the Sonics, Louis Prima, Link Wray and Albert King.
While some musicians avoid taking on other peoples’ work, especially well-loved-classics, Diesel said it was an easy decision to perform some of his favourite tracks.
He said he felt the songs sat well next to his music because they were the some of the major inspiration behind his work.
“I just do my thing so it’s not about matching them note for note, but the essence that really pricked my ears when I heard them is still there,” he said.
Diesel said there was something special about playing in regional areas and he was looking forward to heading to Warwick.
“I find it really refreshing and you can have a lot of fun,” he said.
“Playing closer to home tends to be more stressful as there are a lot more distractions.
“When I get out to the regional areas, I feel really freed up.”
He said while he had hit the road in order to promote the new album, released on July 1, he would certainly be throwing a few of his own classics into the set.
Diesel performs at the Warwick RSL on Thursday August 18.
Tickets are $40 and available from the venue.
