Seniors say bring Australia Day back to Warwick
SENIOR citizens in Warwick fear holding Australia Day celebrations at Glengallan Homestead could exclude them from taking part for a second year in a row.
The seniors say a decision by the Southern Downs Regional Council to move this year's Warwick festivities to Glengallan excluded them because of issues accessing the site.
While the council is yet to make a decision on next year's event, the seniors are urging them to bring the event back to the Rose City.
Marj Mogridge, 90, hasn't missed an Australia Day celebration in decades, but this year wasn't able to make it to Glengallan.
"Lots of my friends over 90 couldn't make it," she said.
"It's not that I don't think Glengallan is a beautiful venue - it's just not Warwick and not for Australia Day.
"I'd like to be able to attend Australia Day for as long as I live.
"This year I stayed at home and wished I could have been there."
Former Southern Downs mayor Ron Bellingham was also critical of the decision.
"Whilst Glengallan is a great facility, it's not the place to host Warwick's Australia Day," he said.
"I don't think it's appropriate to fiddle with something already working."
In previous years Australia Day celebrations had been held in Warwick parks, including Victoria, Federation and Leslie parks.

Glengallan Homestead Trust chair Donna Fraser said the council approached her last year about hosting Australia Day following low attendance rates at events in the Rose City.
"After discussions with the council we agreed to open up the homestead in exchange for a fee," she said.
"It was a very successful day with 2000 people in attendance.
"The fact an extra 1800 people found their way to Glengallan than to previous local park events makes me think would you need a bus?"
For Australia Day 2016, the council is asking for residents' feedback on their preferred location.
The council is running a brief survey on Survey Monkey, which can be accessed through links on the council's website. Mayor Peter Blundell acknowledged there had been some feedback about accessibility issues.
"Council decided to seek community feedback about the preferred location; whether that be Warwick, Glengallan Homestead - with some public transport - or perhaps another location entirely," he said.
Not everyone enjoyed the festivities at Glengallan, with Warwick Senior Citizens president Joe Owens describing it as a "disaster".
"The uneven sloping ground does not lend itself to being family or senior friendly," he said.
"Try pushing a walker or a mobility scooter over this property and then to get to the toilets?"
Claims of issues with accessibility have been disputed by the Glengallan Trust.
Mrs Fraser said the site had full disability access.
"We're not just some paddock in the middle of nowhere," she said.
"We're a business; we have full disability access to all facilities - including disabled toilets."
