Australian dies as he descends from Everest Base Camp

A MELBOURNE man has died after climbing to Mount Everest's base camp in Nepal.

The Herald Sun understands the father of two was trekking with three other Victorians when he became ill at the camp during last Thursday night.

In the morning, he began the 5,300 metre descent back down with his team and their local Sherpa guides, but he died on the way.

The man, a manager of a well known technology company, is believed to have walked the Kokoda Track last year.

It's believed his family in Melbourne was informed on Friday afternoon and the travelling group has made the decision to stay with the body in Nepal until arrangements can be made to bring him home.

The Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade told the Herald Sun it was "aware of the death of an Australian man in Nepal. We stand ready to offer consular assistance."

The base camp is one of two for Mount Everest - the other in Tibet - and is walked by thousands of trekkers every year.
