Award-winning Cooper eyes titles

AFTER winning best player in the recent Test series, Carly Cooper will return to Cunningham colours for the state club championships at Chinchilla this weekend.

Cooper, Maddie Burton, Anthony O'Leary and Tim Forster were part of the team which went down in the final last year to Tansey.

Team members Zac O'Leary and Samantha Burton have gone up to seniors and been replaced in the side by Dougal Strahley and Sally Gilbert.

Cunningham is fielding open, mixed and two junior teams at Chinchilla.

The junior teams include six players who gained experience in the international games and junior round robin this month at Cunningham and Warwick carnivals.

Cooper captained Australia and was best female player in the series against Ireland, Dougal Strahley and Sophie Forster played for the Australian development team, dubbed the Joeys, while Maddie Burton, Tim Forster and Anthony O'Leary played for Queensland.

Cunningham club secretary Robyn Cooper said the club had already won a state title at Chinchilla.

"Our first junior team has plenty of experience," she said.

The state championships start tomorrow and have attracted 86 teams.

It will be an opportunity for players to impress state selection in the run up to the selection of teams for next year's national championships in Darwin.

The nationals are held every second year and were hosted by the Warwick club last year.
