17 mums: Baby boom hits Southern Downs
IT looked like Mother's Day all over again when 17 new mothers with babies and prams descended on the Central Hotel in High Street last Thursday.
All the babies were born within months of one another.
The meet-up came about when hairdresser, Kaia Schulze of Cuts 'n' Curls in Maryland St realised that lots of babies had been born around the same time as her son, Weston.
"It's a nice bunch of girls getting together instead of being stuck at home," said Kaia.
Finding a space was a challenge but Kaia said the Central Hotel worked out perfectly as the managers were welcoming and there was also room for 17 mothers and babies and a large number of prams.
"Five of us met in a bakery last week and it was difficult to get all the prams in," she said.
Kaia and three of her friends were all pregnant around the same time and when Weston came into the world, so did Emma, Paige and Harvey, to mums, Belinda Minatto, Katrina Rudd and Angela Gunnlauggson.
"So with my friends here, and our doctor, who had a baby at the same time, we formed our own little mothers' group.'
Having been through it before, Kaia knew that reaching out to new mums was important. Growing up in Stanthorpe, she had lived in Brisbane but moved to Toowoomba when her daughter was born.
"I didn't have support there, I tried to join a few groups," she said.
"I don't know everyone here but it is good to meet new people."
