Five weeks premature, baby Finlay surprises the experts

BORN weighing a tiny 2.13kg, Finlay Anthony Jensen took everyone by surprise when he entered the world five weeks early on October 20.

Finlay spent two weeks in the Special Care Nursery at St Vincent's Hospital in Toowoomba but is now home with mum and dad, Amy and Luke Jensen.

Amy was taken by surprise when her waters broke early.

"Finlay was breech so after consulting Warwick Hospital, we were sent through to St Vincent's in Toowoomba," Amy said.

"The staff were really good and we got to know them quite well," she said.

The cost of having a premature baby can add up, with the additional travel and accommodation costs.

"It gets quite expensive having to buy so many meals and travel," she said.

Amy said the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme provided through Queensland Health was a big help.

The subsidy helps pay for travel and accommodation expenses when Queensland residents require medically necessary treatment not available within 50km.

Amy said Finlay had settled in well at home, with no ongoing health issues and now weighing 2.3kg.
