A GOLFER who lost his clubs in the Grantham flood last year is now going great guns as a member of the Warwick Golf Club.

Despite living on the side of a hill, Nathan Dionysius, 18, and his family only had five minutes between when they saw floodwater cross the railway line to one-metre-deep water in their home.

All that made it through the flood were a few photos high up on walls and five cars they quickly moved.

His mother, Janelle Dionysius, is grateful the family made it through the flood.

They could have been on the road to a junior golf tournament at Tenterfield that day. "We would have been washed away," Janelle said.

Nathan received a scholarship through the Breaking Out Foundation, a year of coaching under Warwick professional Rob McConnell and $1500 for tournaments.

The aim of the foundation is to identify young people who are passionate, gifted or talented in arts, science or sport that, due to circumstances beyond their control will have difficulty realising their potential and dreams.

Nathan's handicap has dropped six shots since he started under McConnell in Warwick. He joined the Warwick club in January.

"We love it out here, I have nothing but praise for the Warwick club," Janelle said.

With a handicap of five, Nathan is five shots short of the possibility of following a professional dream.

He scored 74 and 76 in the first two rounds of the club championships at the weekend, seven shots behind leader Steve Gander with two rounds to play this weekend.
