DRAG racer Chris Bolton got a bit of a scare last year at the VW Nationals in Warwick.

While racing at the Warwick Dragway Bolton and the VW racing car he was driving hit the side walls at almost 170kms/h.

He escaped without serious injury but the car he was driving was not so lucky.

"I hit the wall going around 160-170 kilometres per hour," Bolton said.

"The car was a write-off but we kept the engine," he said.

That engine now sits in Bolton's new racing car he built with the help of Wayne Penrose who provided the body for the new racer.

Bolton said he had not yet raced the buggy but was looking forward to putting it through the paces at the Warwick Dragway.

"It hasn't even been driven on the road yet," he said.

"This will be the first time I've been able to race in the new car."

Bolton said he had learnt his lesson from last time and knew how to avoid a repeat this year.

"Just make sure it goes straight," he laughed.

"I'm hoping to get under the five-second bracket with it.

"Anything under 6.1 seconds and I'll be happy."

Bolton joins more than 100 entrants in this year's VW Nationals drag racing event at the Warwick Dragway over the weekend.

According to organiser Craig Hughes it's the biggest turnout in the event's 10-year history.

"It just gets bigger and better every year," Craig Hughes said.
