Back rower claims Wattles highest honour
RUGBY LEAGUE: Ryan Duggan's standout season for the Wattles Warriors was recognised when he was named Club Footballer of the Year at the annual trophy night.
Club president Neil Phelan said Duggan had not missed a game during the 2017 season and had led by example.
"He has great passion for the game and the Wattles club,” Phelan said.
"Ryan is an underrated player and a great captain. Few A-grade players average 40 tackles a game.
"He shows no signs of slowing up at age 34 which is largely due to him being a fitness fanatic. During the season, he was at the gym on weeknights when there was no club training.”
Michael Lasserre was named under-18 player of the year, Aaron Scheid the best in reserve grade and the A-grade best and fairest award was shared by half Matt Duggan and fullback Jackson Green.
Meanwhile, Phelan, secretary Jo Frizzell and treasurer Shelley Duggan have all indicated they will not be seeking re-election to their current positions for season 2018.
"I plan to stay on the committee but always said I would do two years as president,” Phelan said.
"I had two aims at the start of the season; make the A-grade finals and keep the club financially viable and we achieved both aims.”
A new committee will be elected at the annual general meeting on October 9.
