Back the Rats to win the sevens 2017 flag

SPORTSVIEW with Gerard Walsh

WELL done to each of the Warwick Water Rats rugby union women for winning the minor premiership in the first season of the Downs sevens competition.

I have been encouraging rugby union fans and supporters of all things sport to join me in putting a bit of our time and a few dollars on the line to back the women.

Back the women to win the premiership and if they don't, we have to do a Ratathon, a bit of kicking, passing and a few push-ups for raise a few dollars. You can't say a team is going to win and if they don't, not be prepared to admit your tip was wrong.

So send me an email gerardw@warwick dailynews.com.au and show your support for the Water Rats women.

Now they have won the minor premiership, they are a realistic chance of winning the competition from what I saw at the weekend, but it will be just as tough for the Warwick women to win as it is for any of the men's teams in Downs footy.

If the women win, it will only be the second time by my reckoning that a Warwick team has won a Downs women's premiership in any sport.

The Warwick Wolves women won a Football Toowoomba premiership a few years ago.

On that day, BJ Warrener was goalie for the Wolves and also successfully kicked one goal in the penalty shootout.

BJ has gone on to play National Premier League since moving to the metropolitan area.
