Back to our heritage for Australia Day
AUSTRALIA Day celebrations will be held at Glengallan Homestead this year with organisers hoping to get back to the theme: history and heritage.
Southern Downs councillor and head of the Australia Day committee Neil Meiklejohn said for some time they had been searching for an event to be held at the homestead.
"Over the years we've looked at holding different events there," Cr Meiklejohn said. "I discussed it with the mayor and the Glengallan Trust and they liked the ideas.
"I think it will be a really nice opportunity for people to have a look at all the hard work the trust has put into the homestead."
Cr Meiklejohn said he also had family history relating to the homestead with his great-great grandfather building the cellar.
"The homestead will be open for free on Australia Day, usually there is a fee of $10 to inspect," he said.
"It will be a special year, especially with the Anzac centenary so we thought it would be nice to get back to our heritage in the area.
"There will be markets, a citizenship ceremony and the Australia Day awards."
Cr Meiklejohn said he hoped to see a good crowd at the January 26 event despite the quick drive from town.
"It's something different and it's good to mix it up a bit each year," he said.
"Australia Day weekend is always huge for Warwick with the cricket carnival and Allora's heritage weekend.
"I would like to see as many people as possible support the event and take the opportunity to look at the homestead."
On the day there will also be entertainment and old style games.
