Bad hair day small price to pay for Warwick woman
HAVING lost her husband, son and several friends to cancer, Barb Woods knows all too well the impact of the disease.
Now the 85-year-old Akooramak resident is doing what she can to help find a cure, taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave on Tuesday.
"I'm getting the one blade all over,” Mrs Woods said.
"I was the only one brave enough to do it, but I don't care about losing my hair.
"It's a one-day wonder around here. They all look at you the first day wondering what on earth you've done, but the next day you're part of the crowd again.
"If the money I raise makes a little difference and goes towards helping to find a cure, then it's completely worth it.”
Barb's late husband Alan and son Robert, both Australian rodeo champions, died from cancer.
Robert was only 37 when he lost his battle with kidney cancer.
"I'm also doing this in remembrance of my dear friends - Ken Coleman, Stuart McPhee and Hedley Parder,” Mrs Woods said.
"I'm wheelchair-bound now but have been spared from cancer.
"I can still knit and sew... and I still have all my marbles, I think.
"So I'm asking the community, and especially the rodeo community, to get behind me and dig deep to find a cure.”
Mrs Woods has raised $400 and will meet the clippers at 11am on Tuesday.
