Bandidos associate arrested after waltzing into police station

AN ASSOCIATE of the outlaw Bandidos Motorcycle Club was arrested on Sunday after the Ipswich Rugby League grand final in bizarre circumstances when he walked into the foyer of Ipswich Police Station drinking a stubbie.

Up to 100 unruly league fans were involved in a melee that saw 12 arrests and 50 police called to streets surrounding North Ipswich Reserve in the aftermath of the grand final.

What started as police attempting to arrest a man inside the grounds following the Norths Tigers versus Brothers clash escalated into a rolling series of altercations that saw one police officer taken to St Andrews Private Hospital with facial injuries.

A 28-year-old Riverview man was charged with assaulting and obstructing police for his role in the fracas.

He was also charged with consuming liquor in a public place, in this instance in the police station foyer.

In a scenario you couldn't script, Inspector Keith McDonald said the man had entered the station to "check on a friend of his who had also been arrested".

"It turned out the person was an associate of the Bandidos criminal motorcycle gang," Insp McDonald said.
