Barack Obama threatens to stop families suing Saudis

BARACK Obama is threatening to use his presidential veto to block legislation that would allow families of September 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia's government for damages.

The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism law, which would remove sovereign immunity that prevents lawsuits against governments, has been passed by the Senate and is headed to the House of Representatives.

President Obama argues the law changes longstanding international law on sovereign immunity and makes the US vulnerable in courts around the world.

The Saudis deny responsibility for the 2001 attacks and have reportedly threatened to sell up to a trillion dollars of US securities and other assets if it becomes law.

Critics of Saudi Arabia, a key US ally, have called for the release of a classified section of a report on the September 11 attacks.
