Bareback bronc rider steals first place

THINGS are heating up as the round two winner of the bareback bronc APRA National Finals is announced.

Wodonga cowboy Jarrod McKane won Friday's round, scoring 78.5 points on Little Speck from the Garry McPhee string.

The 18-year-old won with two points and stole the title from round one winner David Worsfold who hails from Wandoan in Queensland.

A shearer by trade, McKane won the novice second-division bareback at the 2018 Warwick Rodeo.

He finished the pro tour this year in third place, in the standings behind Ben Hall and Worsfold.

McKane split second with Luke Higgins who competed in round one on Thursday night.

"It is a bonus to place in the rounds at the Warwick Rodeo and will be an even bigger bonus if I could win the title," he said.

While he only scored half a point more in round two than round one, McKane said the Friday night ride boosted his energy and confidence.

"It is a great adrenaline rush to get on a good bucking horse," McKane said.

Before entering the bareback competition, he was competing in the junior steer ride and second-division bull ride but even now McKane doesn't feel he is competing against fellow riders in the finals.

"It is between me and the horse I have drawn," he said.

Only two of the 15 riders in the bull ride made time with Upper Horton rider Troy Wilkinson winning with a score of 82 from pro tour winner Will Purcell.

New South Wales rider Cody Angland is one of the most experienced riders in saddle bronc and won on Friday night with 79.5, two points in front of Taroom rider Steve Hay .
