'BARKING MAD': MP slams $100,000 dog weight loss program

MEMBER for Southern Downs James Lister has taken his political opposition by the scruff of the neck in a parliamentary speech condemning the economic governance of the Queensland Labor Party.

In particular, Mr Lister took aim at the government's recent announcement of $100,000 in funding for a weight loss program for podgy pooches.

The MP said "poor" economic management was creating debt for future generations.

"At least we had a bit of a laugh for our $100,000," Mr Lister said on Thursday.

"Ludicrous stuff such as weight loss programs for dogs. My good friend the member for Cairns waxed lyrical about a wonderful program to spend $100,000 on weight loss for dogs.

"He is barking mad."

Announced late last month, the funding was awarded to Cairns-based company K9 Weight Challenge Pty Ltd to develop their WAGSTA pet health app.

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the app would help get expert dog weight management advice directly to dog lovers around the world.

"We're investing in innovative businesses like this to create the tech-based jobs of the future in Cairns," Mr Healy said.

But Mr Lister said it was a sign of "poor" budgeting that ignored the needs of people in the bush.

"The people in Southern Downs were aghast to find out that the government is spending $45 million on a bike track linking some Labor electorates in Brisbane," he said.

"What sort of impact would that money have were it spent in an electorate such as Southern Downs?

"We could fix the Gore Highway between Goondiwindi and Millmerran. We could eradicate pests. We could build 4,000 kilometres of dog fencing to protect the hard working graziers in my electorate of Southern Downs from dog attacks.

"The government does not get economics. The word 'Labor' is a byword for economic backwardness, taxes, debt and unemployment."

Waterford MP Shannon Fentiman hit back, saying NAB's most recent monthly business survey shows trend business conditions in Queensland to be the highest of all mainland states and trend business confidence to be the second highest.
