Bash at big time for Mark Steketee
CRICKET: Mark Steketee pulled on his new Brisbane Heat shirt and took to the nets for his first team training session yesterday after being named in the Big Bash League team on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, the 19-year-old from Warwick was named in the Brisbane Heat supplementary list but with paceman Nick Buchanan out injured, Steketee was given the chance to step up.
For Steketee, a right-arm fast bowler who played for Australia last year at the ICC Under-19 World Cup, the announcement could not have come at a better time.
"It was pretty exciting to get the call - just in time for Christmas too," he said.
Despite playing for South Brisbane in the XXXX Gold Premier Grade Competition, Steketee lives and works in Warwick - travelling to Brisbane for training and games two to three times a week.
"I've got the best of both worlds at the moment," he said. "I'm working in town with Shelleys Industries who are very good to me and am playing cricket in Brisbane."
Steketee said he sympathised with Buchanan, sidelined with an unfortunate injury.
"I had a side strain earlier in the season so I know it can be disappointing," he said.
"But Buck has come back from bigger things than that and I'm sure he will be right.
"Hopefully I can get some valuable experience being in the squad and improve my game."
The Brisbane Heat will go up against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Gabba tonight.
It won't be an easy match for the Heat but captain James Hopes said they had several options within the 13-man squad.
"We have got some flexibility there - we've got Pete Forrest in the group if we want to add a batsman - and we've got options with the bowlers," he said.
Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster for Heat home matches.
