Bass set to launch towards her dreams

IF EMILY Bass gets a clear path to the try-line, the opponents may as well give up chasing.

The Scots PGC student will fly to Amsterdam on Saturday to play in the Tribe Sevens rugby tournament, just one week after she broke the under-18 female 400m hurdles record at the Oceania Athletics Championships and was part of a record-breaking 4 x 100m hurdles relay team as well.

"Rugby sevens is very speedy - you try and avoid the contact so you can find the open space, which obviously suits me with my speed," Bass said.

"I enjoy playing scrum-half because you get to go in the scrums and line-outs as well - you are always in the play."

When she takes the field with and against overseas rugby sevens players, there will be no time for reflection on her athletic achievements.

"When I finished, the announcer said I had just missed the record," she said.

"But then when we did the medal presentations, they told me I had beaten the record so I was stoked.

"I only just beat it, it was by about 0.007 seconds."

The team will fly on from the Netherlands to London, where they will watch the Australian Women's Sevens team in action, and interact with them.

"I'm just going to pick up as much knowledge from them as I can, this will be a real learning experience," she said.

"I'm really enjoying my rugby so I'll just see how far I can go with it - the Olympics are a dream of mine.

"In athletics, I definitely want to get to the international level.

"For now I'm just enjoying both, so hopefully I can keep playing both."
