BATON RELAY: Warwick chosen for trial run
WARWICK has been given the honour of hosting a trial run for the Queen's Baton Relay.
As one of only two cities to effectively see the relay twice, Warwick will welcome the full Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay convoy including branded vehicles, security and filming staff.
Southern Downs councillors and council staff will be the batonbearers.
The full route through Warwick will be practised on the morning of December 2, before the convoy moves to Gatton in the afternoon as it will during the real relay in March.
Multiple roads will be closed in the CBD from 4am until about noon.
Palmerin St will be closed in both directions, whereas only one lane will be shut on other roads on the route including Fitzroy St, Guy St and Victoria St.
Albion St will also be shut for a few minutes as the convoy crosses the road.
Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said the route was designed to pass as many schools as possible.
"The memories children will make at something like this will last a lifetime,” Cr Dobie said.
Cr Dobie said the community was invited to watch the practice run.
"We appreciate the burden (of road closures) on businesses in the CBD and Rose City Shoppingworld, but we're asking people to be patient,” she said.
Business owners were notified about the road closures this week.
Classic Dimensions owner Robyn Fraser said hosting the relay would be a great honour.
"It'll put Warwick on the map again, all these little things promote the word 'Warwick',” she said.
"Any street closure makes a change (to business), it could make it like a mall.
"That's what we have to do to embrace the fact we're one of the lucky shires.”
Mrs Fraser, as treasurer of the Warwick Polocrosse Club, said it was a pleasure to have polocrosse player, William Reardon, included in the relay riding his horse.
"We're thrilled polocrosse will be promoted and it will be a good promotion for the World Cup in Warwick in 2019.”
Warwick Outdoors and Sports co-owner John Bacon said it would be good to see the relay go past his Palmerin St store.
"It's good for the town but it's a shame they have to shut the street on a Saturday,” he said.
"They could have done it on a Sunday but that would affect the cafes.
"But it's not as if it's every weekend.”
The real Queen's Baton Relay will be taking place in Warwick on Easter Thursday, March 29.
