Batsman admits Max's XI rely a lot on one star

MATT Grew admits he enjoys the social side of the Condamine Sports Club Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival as much as the games.

He is proud to play for Max's XI, a team which plays in memory of the late Max Thorley.

"Max was younger than me but I played cricket with his older brother Geoff as we were growing up,” Grew said.

"Our team is younger than most, we just like to get all the boys together for a big weekend.”

This year, a photo of the late Scott "Pincher” Ellis is on the team shirts along with Max's photo.

"We will also remember Pincher as he was a part of Max's XI, we will definitely miss his cricket ability,” he said.

Grew said John Cleary was the key.

"If John doesn't perform with the bat, we don't tend to win many games,” Grew said.

Geoff Thorley is out due to work commitments.

"We want to have Geoff there for his cricket ability and as a friend,” he said.

BEST SCORE: I scored 45 last year at Slade Park which is my best in all the carnivals I have played.

DUCKS: Too many to count.

LONGEST INNINGS: The 45 last year.

CATCH RATIO: I try to get myself in a position where I don't get many catches. Third man would be perfect but I tend to fill in when needed and leave playing to younger blokes.
