Batsmen dig in to set team up for a hot win

A GREAT opening partnership between RSL Diggers players Jeff Morris and Jamie Saunders helped the team to a win against Wheatvale at the weekend.

The Diggers were first to bat in the extremely hot temperatures.

Morris started well, clocking up 29 runs before being caught by Wheatvale's Chris Malone behind the stumps.

It was Wheatvale bowler Chris Cantwell who put an end to Jamie Saunders' top batting performance, sending him for an lbw on 56 runs.

The Wheatvale bowlers lifted their game and chewed through the middle-order batsmen quickly.

Carter Bilborough picked up two wickets in his four overs, while Neil Cantwell grabbed two wickets for 25 in his eight overs.

The Diggers' 10th batsmen Luke Cullen put on a good show, holding out for 23 runs before being bowled by James Breen, leaving Wheatvale to chase a total of 154.

Wheatvale's top four batsmen were all sent back to the dug-out before reaching double-digit run totals.

Fifth to the crease, Neil Cantwell managed to clock up 35 runs before Saunders pulled of a great catch at mid-on.

Carly Cooper earned the second-highest run total of 18, with James Breen close behind on 16.

The Diggers' bowlers proved too tough, knocking Wheatvale all out for 97 - 57 runs short.

Saunders bagged three wickets in his five overs while Noel Knight and Luke Cullen both picked up two.

Searing hot temperatures meant the Inglewood versus Sovereign game was shortened to 30 overs instead of 40.

Once again Inglewood proved too tough to beat at home, winning the game 7-135 runs, two ahead of Sovereign who were all out of 133.

Sovereign opening batsman Tony Munro was the top scorer of the match with 71 runs.

Inglewood bowler Wayne Ferby performed well, taking three wickets in his six overs for 17 runs.

Teammate Neil McCosker also took three wickets.

The two Allora teams also took to the field in some pretty hot conditions on Saturday.

Rascals batted first and a strong opening partnership between Brad Johnson (27) and Mick Kelk (46) got them off to a good start.

But Allora bowlers Mitch McLennan, Andrew Peterson and Nick Morris proved a bit too tough, each taking two wickets.

The Allora batsmen put on a solid performance, with Brodie Frizell their top scorer on 27 not out.
