Batten down before storms strike the Southern Downs

THERE are plenty of things Southern Downs residents can do now to prepare for storm season.

SES controller John Newley said a number of contractors in town could inspect trees and advise whether they should be removed.

"Get a contractor to come in and save you the cost of storm damage," he said.

"Have a walk around the house and take a good look at roofing line and make sure there are no loose sheets of tin.

"If wind gets underneath and peels one off, it can take a number off with it.

"Also, just remove anything loose in the yard that could become a missile in a storm."

Check your roof and gutters for damage or loose material and replace any damaged or missing tiles

Clear gutters and downpipes of leaves and blockages so they don't overflow.

Once a storm warning has been issued, there are steps you can take to minimise damage.

  • Park vehicles and boats under shelter

  • Charge your mobile phone to ensure you have reception

  • Store or weigh down loose objects around your home like outdoor furniture that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury

  • Ensure your emergency kit is complete including a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit

  • Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area

  • Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning

If you are away from home contact family or friends to prepare your property.

If you need SES assistance phone 132500.

If it is an emergency phone 000 immediately.
