Barastoc Interstate Series starts on Friday

POLOCROSSE: Will Weston and Hayden Turnbull will be two New South Wales players to watch when the Barastoc Interstate Series starts in Warwick on Good Friday.

Weston has played in the past two World Cups for Australia and Turnbull was part of the 2007 Australian team, which won the second World Cup in Warwick.

Left-hander Turnbull was outstanding in 2007 but will be remembered by some as the player who painted an old Brumby ute in Australian colours and headed to the cup with a vehicle that wouldn't haven't been a chance in a show 'n' shine contest.

The three Anderson brothers - Lance, Chris and Mitchell - are all in the New South Wales open team.

Warwick star Cameron Shepherd, who captained Australia in the 2011 World Cup, is Queensland open men's captain for the Barastoc and, like Turnbull, is left handed.

Shepherd is more likely to play at the goal shooting end of the field and could come up against Turnbull, who has predominately been a defender down the years. World Cup player Trent Collins, from Tanse,y is in the Queensland men's team.

The battle of the women will be some guide to the likely chances of Queensland and New South Wales at the nationals in Albury starting April 18.

Cunningham player Lauren Cant will captain a Queensland team which includes Hafey sisters from Tansey, Beth and Emma.

New South Wales will be hard to beat with 2011 World Cup player Sandra Weston in the line-up, along with April Leggett who was strong in the winning 2012 New South Wales women's team in the nationals in Warwick.

Interstate games will be played in eight Barastoc grades between Queensland and New South Wales.

There will be a three-way battle in the open and under-21 men's competitions as Victoria will also travel to Queensland with two teams.

The Victorian open men's team will be coached by Hugh Radford, a long-time Test and state player who played a Test match in Warwick two decades ago.

Radford is from the Rosedale area in the Gippsland district in Victoria.
