Battle of the top two in Warwick cricket
CRICKET: Leaders Maryvale Condamine will play Wheatvale in the match of the day in Condamine Cup cricket on Saturday.
The match of the day was originally planned for Sunday but has been brought back to Saturday at Queens Park as the Davis Shield game which was washed out last Sunday will be played this week.
Maryvale is unbeaten so far this season and face the second-placed Wheatvale.
"We beat Wheatvale in our first clash this season but Wheatvale has proved over the years they are a good team,” Maryvale captain Paul Bourke said.
"They can always bounce back and are second on the ladder so aren't too far behind us.”
Most of the Maryvale Condamine club players were in the winning Australia Day Carnival team 10 days ago.
"After winning the carnival, we will be trying to add a premiership victory,” Bourke said.
Maryvale last won the premiership in the 2015-2016 season but has gone down in the past two grand finals.
Bourke isn't feeling any pressure from his team being unbeaten.
"It doesn't faze me, I only worry about getting our team together for the next game,” he said.
"Paul Cantwell is always a worry and scored a century in the carnival. He is always good for quick runs for Wheatvale.
"If Chris Cantwell plays, he adds to the Wheatvale depth in bowling and batting.”
After three decades of club cricket in Warwick, Bourke said Chris Cantwell on his day was as good as any bowler he had faced.
"At his best, he was up there with the best in pace and moves the ball off the pitch.”
Bourke said as a team, Maryvale was better across the paddock than last year.
"Everything is working at the moment, it won't be easy to come up with an 11 for the finals series,” he said.
"I plan to have a panel of selectors so it won't just be my decision as we will have more than 11 players.”
The only player out is Tom Bourke who is mustering in Central Queensland.
Slade Park battle
THE battle between Warwick Hotel Colts and Rosewood Redbacks at Slade Park on Saturday will be one of the most interesting in the final six weeks of the season.
The two teams are third and fourth on the table and the loser could drop out of the top four.
Sovereign will play Railway Hotel Rascals at Mayhew Oval on Saturday with both teams one win out of the top four.
