Be aware for breast health
WOMEN are being warned to be breast aware as hundreds of Queensland women are developing breast cancers between screening each year.
A warning by Cancer Council follows the publication of new data revealing women diagnosed with breast cancer between mammograms experience poorer survival.
Health promotion officer for Breastscreen Queensland Jessica Hodds said, although women over 40 are recommended to have a mammogram on a two-yearly basis, it was important for them to remain vigilant between these check-ups.
"Basically with breast cancer it's the changing of cells that can grow at a rapid rate that can change at any time," Ms Hodds said.
"It's important to get to know the look and feel of your breasts and if you notice any changes like dimpling or lumps to see a GP.
"We tell women, particularly older women as most breast cancer occurs between 50 and 75 years of age, to check their breasts once a month in the shower as a reminder."
Breastscreen Queensland screens all women over 40 with a mobile service from Toowoomba soon making its way to Warwick and other towns.
"At least 60 per cent of women in Warwick would come and get screened which is good but not perfect," Ms Hodds said.
The mobile service will be in Warwick from September 28 to January 8.
They will also visit Allora from September 21-25, and Clifton from September 14-18.
