Beaton breaks circuit record at Morgan Park
COFFS Harbour rider Beau Beaton has competed in the European Superstock Championships, but it was at Morgan Park Raceway where he impressed in his debut on the track at the weekend.
Beaton covered the 2.967km lap in 1: 15.925 seconds to break the existing Formula One record by half a second.
It was his first time racing in Warwick and he reckons he will be back.
"I knew the track was fun and was asked by Dave Fuller to come to Warwick as he wanted to build the profile of the meeting," Beaton said.
"Dave raced against my Dad. I will come again if they will have me back," he said.
As for his third record in motorcycle racing, he said you get the feel for a good lap.
"I didn't know it was a record when I finished, but I had a good feeling in that lap."
While some sports stars try sport and then think about a career, Beaton did it the other way round.
He did his apprenticeship and, at the age of 22, decided to give motorcycle racing a go.
"I had a lot of assistance from Craig McMartin, one of the greats of Ducati, and rode in the Australian Superbike Championships and had a best of 14th in a field of 40 in the European Superstock Championships. I had a lot of crashes and after a year overseas came back to Australia and work as a commercial air-conditioning technician."
There may not be any more lap records at Morgan Park for Beaton; his 2009 Ducati 1198 is on the market.
He has plenty more bikes to race and said he was lucky to receive a lot of support from Suzuki and the chance to test new Ducati bikes.
"I have raced the new Panigale. It is not much faster to be honest but the electronics are more advanced."
The Masters of Morgan Park meeting was put on by the Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland and attracted 130 riders for an event which included a round of the Brisbane European American Race Series (BEARS).
