Beattie goes for gold
IT WILL be early on a Monday morning in Warwick when Carlee Beattie goes for her first medal at the 2012 Paralympics in London.
The world record holder in the F46 long jump goes into the final at the main stadium at 7.45pm (UK time) on September 2.
She set the long jump world record twice last year, the second time at 5.89m.
Beattie won silver in long jump at the world championships in Christchurch in January, 2011, only a month before last year's earthquake.
She has been training and competing with the Australian team in Wales for the past fortnight as she prepares for London.
So as to put all her efforts into a tilt at gold in the long jump, Beattie will not contest the 200m early on the program, an event she believes could be her best distance on the track.
Two days after the long jump, she will compete in the T46 100m, an event where she won bronze in the world championships.
Round 1 of the 100m will be on September 4 with the final in the September 5 night program, early the next morning in Australia.
Beattie told the Daily News before she headed for training in Wales that she would definitely march in the opening ceremony.
The former St Mary's, Assumption and Warwick High student will be joined by her father Rob Beattie, family members and some friends as part of the Aussies support crew in London.
